A Scenario of Trauma and Addiction

Trauma is defined in Webster’s as “a disordered psychic or behavioral state resulting from mental or emotional stress or physical injury”. This threatening shock imposed from external sources upon the human framework has proven repeatedly in this ministry to be the chief suspect which lays the groundwork for addictive behavior in the individual traumatized.

The Vine of Sodom

One of the most effective ways to break addictive behavior is to keep a journal. It is amazing what we can learn by seeing our feelings articulated on paper, especially when we have not been in touch with them, or have trouble expressing our fears and true selves. Some of the journalizing done by our people is so eloquent; we asked permission to quote from them anonymously for the benefit of our readers. Here is our first excerpt:

God's Opposition to Homosexuality Part 2

In the part one of this article we stressed that God did not design the human body for homosexual union. Sexual intimacy as an expression of genuine romantic love is only to be known and shared in the heterosexual union of husband and wife. It is a gift our Creator gives to a man and a woman who join together in the covenant of marriage. The Bible identifies homosexuality along with fornication, adultery, rape, incest, prostitution, bestiality, looking on another’s nakedness and lust as sinful and commands the people of God to abstain from them.

God's Opposition to Homosexuality Part 1

Deceived individuals in our society are busily attempting to remove all prohibitions against homosexual behavior, fantasy and identity. Even within the church we hear calls for reversing the long-standing condemnation against homosexuality. More than one counselee in the throes of the emotional work to find freedom has yearned for God to permit homosexuality so there would be no need to resist the desires of the flesh. Yet the Word of God speaks with clarity and unity against homosexual practice and desire.

Who I Am in Christ

Have you confessed with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believed in your heart that God raised Him from the dead? If so, you are saved from the dominion of darkness and brought into the kingdom of Christ. You have been purified and born again because you have obeyed the truth which is the word of God. In Christ you have found reality. Now let the reality of Christ, Which tells you who you are, dwell richly within you.

The Word of God Says:

Demystifying Temptation

One of the most frustrating things about working toward freedom from homosexuality is the sudden and unpredictable flare-ups of sexual desire. Numerous people have had the experience of attending a LIFE ministry meeting where they have gotten in touch with the truth of God and soon after leaving had a strong desire to have sex with someone. Some counselees are abruptly tempted by sinful desires while sitting on the subway or at work or even in church. When I was a pastor and struggling with homosexual feelings I often had thoughts of and desire for my homosexual partner while I was preaching!

What is this Craving for Love?

In understanding homosexuality, it is essential to go beyond the common explanations that it is love needs that have not been met, or a defensive detachment from the same-sex parent. These are starting points or catalysts, but they are not what homosexuality really is. Homosexuality is what grows out of the ungodly reaction to not having love needs met, and just giving love will not avail because our responses are twisted. Love can become dependency, we sexualize love, we want to control love, or we have no place for love.

Never Will I Leave Your or Forsake You

Never will I leave you or forsake you. - Hebrews 13:5

I clung to these words as I sought freedom from homosexuality when my lovers would leave me. I finally realized that for 13 years I had tried to fill a spiritual need in an emotional/sexual way, looking to women rather than to my Creator for purpose, security, and identity, and believing a lie about myself. Now I had come to a place of real truth from the Bible, and only through personal knowledge of the Lord was I able to begin to understand my real identity.

A Right Conception of Fun

One of the strands that makes up the binding cord of homosexuality is a skewed or twisted definition of fun. Sexual fantasies and/or actions that are sinful, dirty, dangerous, forbidden, abnormal, demeaning, addictive take on a sense of being exciting or fun. Surprisingly, these fantasies and acts do not appear to the person to be dysfunctional—at least not when they are in the midst of temptation. In these moments, homosexuality appears laden with all sorts of good and pleasurable experiences.
